Artist's Description
I was shooting a fur catalog for a retail store, and on a break I asked the model to put on one of the pieces, nothing but underwear underneath, and take this pose. It was a spontaneous moment, and I don't know what I was thinking at the time, but I like how unconventional the body position is. It's certainly not the way clothes were to be photographed. Often I had in mind to do something, anything, that was outside the parameters of the job, just to stay fresh and have some fun. Now, today, I feel it has artistic merit being rather surreal.
About Steve Ladner
In the early 1970s I created a fashion photography studio in New York City. I was shooting for GQ, Harpers Bazaar, Esquire, Town&Country, other magazines, and cosmetic campaigns for Revlon, Chanel, and others. In the 1980s I lived in France and shot for French Vogue and other fashion magazines and advertising accounts. I always approached the work as an art and did my best to make commercial work as artistic as I could make it given the restrictions. Some of my fashion work now has a vintage fashion art appeal. I believe the images I chose transcend their original purpose and are interesting in their color, composition, emotion, and form.
