Artist's Description
This photograph was part of a series I shot for a French magazine called L'Officiel. We were in the countryside outside Paris. This was in 1988. When I moved to France in 1985, I was surprised to see that smoking was everywhere. In the USA smoking was already beginning to be prohibited in some public spaces, but in France you could not avoid it, even sitting in a cafe or restaurant right next to your table, or sitting across from a smoker during a meal. The theme of the shoot was to create a vintage look, and I was happy that I was able to create a French Gothic look, inspired by the famous Grant Wood painting, "American Gothic."
About Steve Ladner
In the early 1970s I created a fashion photography studio in New York City. I was shooting for GQ, Harpers Bazaar, Esquire, Town&Country, other magazines, and cosmetic campaigns for Revlon, Chanel, and others. In the 1980s I lived in France and shot for French Vogue and other fashion magazines and advertising accounts. I always approached the work as an art and did my best to make commercial work as artistic as I could make it given the restrictions. Some of my fashion work now has a vintage fashion art appeal. I believe the images I chose transcend their original purpose and are interesting in their color, composition, emotion, and form.
